Report card joy

March 5, 2018

I sigh.

“Stop it,” I tell myself sternly.  “Log off Facebook and get some work done.”

I resist the urge to scroll down just a little further, and I hit the log out button before I can change my mind.

I type my password into Powerschool again and the screen brightens back to life.

Only four more report card comments.  I can do this.

….and I do.  With the help of a little cutting and pasting and some well-disciplined forcing myself to stay focused, I actually get the last one done.

Five days before they’re due.

FIVE days before they’re due.

I want to jump around and dance.  I want to shimmy around in my chair with excitement.

I want to call every teacher I worked with my first ten years of teaching to let them know.  I—Natasha—me—I actually got them done early.  Can you believe it?

I celebrate how responsible I am by commenting on every one of my students’ slices of life.  Look what a great teacher I am!  Report cards: done!  Slice of life comments: done!

My husband comes home from grocery shopping to find me reading blog posts.  “How are the report cards?” he asks, hesitantly.

“Done!” I announce.

He stares at me blankly for a moment.  “Done?”  He asks.  “All of them?”

“Yup!” I smile, loving how surprised he is.  He realizes what a miraculous event this is. “Completely done!”

He stares some more.

What billboard can I proclaim this on, where readers will understand the import?
