Bare essentials

March 6, 2020

“Does this look 17 inches by 9 inches by 10 inches?”

Randy turns away from the computer to face me, confused.  “What?”

I hold out my backpack to him.  “Do you think this is 17 inches by 9 inches by 10 inches? If my carry-on bag is bigger than that I have to check it and pay extra.”

I’d meant for him to eyeball it, but he pulls out a ruler and measures.  “Yes, if you squish it a little.”

“So no packing it to the brim,” I conclude.  Hmm.  That’s not always easy for me.

What do I really need for a weekend trip to visit my parents?

Jeans. Nice enough shirt to look pulled together when accompanying them to the surgery.  Extra pair of socks.  Pajamas.  Toothbrush.

Definitely my writer’s notebook.

Definitely my computer.  Partially for entering report card grades, but mostly to make it easy to post slices.

Definitely a book.  Probably two.  Maybe three.

I know what is essential for a good weekend of travel.

Just a hint of the serious amongst the details…I feel pulled to know the rest of the story.

  2. You definitely know how to prioritize–reading and writing are at the top.
