Last Day of Normal

March 20, 2020

I stood in front of the message board, trying to decide what to write.  I had squandered my extra 10 minutes left over from coming in early by chatting with colleagues, and this was the last task I needed to get done before students started entering the room.

What can I say about today? I wondered.  There were no special assemblies, no meetings where I would be leaving the classroom, no exciting projects to start or finish…..today was one of those in between days when kids were in the middle of assignments, past the beginning but not likely to be done before tomorrow.

I glanced up at the clock, then started writing:

Dear Team,
I think today will be a completely normal day.

We had about 3 hours of normal before the announcement came that there would be an early dismissal, about 3 1/2 hours before the announcement came that schools would be closing for two weeks.

I wonder if I’ll ever again be able to write I think today will be a completely normal day and believe it wholeheartedly.

  1. I’ve been there. So many of us have. Too many. Hang in there.

A question that many are asking, but your way of framing it against the normalcy of “before” is so powerful.
